Please read the full brief here: J4MW & MFLC Submission CIMM Dec 15 2023-1

As we honour migrant workers’ struggle today the International Day of Migrant Workers (December 18),  J4MW shares our recent brief to the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration.

This Committee, which is made up of Federal Members of Parliament, is responsible for studying various immigration issues and then presenting reports to Parliament, which will help to shape Canada’s immigration laws. Currently, the Committee is studying the closed work permit system.

J4MW submitted a brief to bring attention to the colonial origins of the closed permit system, the ongoing structural racism in the program, and concerns that we have about some of the proposed solutions. As we say in our brief, our work focuses on the experiences of migrant agricultural workers, but our vision is for all migrant workers to enjoy secure employment, family life, access to benefits and housing, and permanent status.
